Thumb Basilar Joint Arthritis
Dr. Pedro Loredo Hand Surgeon Dallas Forth Worth at Hand Associates of North Dallas
Thumb basilar joint arthritis, also known as carpometacarpal arthritis is a very painful condition that affects the thumb. The pain at the base of the thumb can be so severe that it makes opening bottles, opening doors, or turning keys impossible to do. Which is due to the debilitating arthritic thumb pain.
This thumb arthritis can affect anyone in the ages between 40 and 50 yrs old. This type of arthritis is due to wear and tear of the cartilage of this joint at the carpometacarpal. Also what happens to the joint with continued trauma from the arthritis is rupture of the ligaments & capsule. The ligaments and capsule surrounding the joint are no longer stable and the carpometacarpal joint starts to slide out place. Which appears as a hump on the base of the thumb.
Dr. Pedro Loredo's initial treatment for thumb basilar joint arthritis is rest, splinting, pain creams, oral steroids, and oral anti-inflammatory medications. For some of the mild cases, this can often alleviate the painful symptoms. Dr. Pedro Loredo Hand Surgeon at Hand Associates of North Dallas, can also utilize steroid injections that are placed directly in the joint to help relieve the pain.
Unfortunately, none of these treatments can regenerate new cartilage. So symptoms always return. When the pain and loss of thumb function becomes to severe to perform any daily activities or work activities. Then Dr. Pedro Loredo at Hand Associates of North Dallas, will recommend surgery. The goal is to help improve the debilitating hand pain and too improve the loss of hand function.
