Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Dr. Pedro Loredo Hand Surgeon Dallas Fort Worth at Hand Associates of North Dallas
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Happens when a nerve is compressed that goes through the wrist and runs to the hand. That nerve is called the median nerve. The issue is the small space of the wrist that contains nine tendons of the fingers and the median nerve. This space of the wrist is called the carpal tunnel.
With time and certain exposures the carpal tunnel becomes crowded with synovial tissue and synovial fluid. Unfortunately, carpal tunnel ligament does not change size, but the contents in the carpal tunnel increase. The contents increase due different exposures like: trauma, repetitive activity, medications, age, illness, vibration, pregnancy, tendonitis, swelling, infections, and inflammation.
Once the space in the carpal tunnel narrows then the transverse carpal tunnel ligament causes pressure on the median nerve. This pressure on the median nerve causes numbness, tingling, hand pain, wrist pain, forearm pain, and shoulder pain.
The hand pain is so severe that it causes patient's sleepless nights. Patients attempt to shake their hands to alleviate the symptoms of numbness and tingling.
It is estimated that carpal tunnel syndrome is found in 6% of the population.

Carpal Tunnel Release for carpal tunnel syndrome
Is an outpatient procedure. Dr. Pedro Loredo, releases the pressure of the median nerve through a tiny opening at the wrist endoscopically. With full view of the carpal tunnel he carefully divides the transverse carpal tunnel ligament. Only the carpal tunnel ligament is divided, and not like other procedures that cut the palm skin, fat, fascia, and muscle. Which in turn allows for a speedy recovery and quicker return to daily / work activities.
Once the ligament is released. The roof of the carpal tunnel will develop a new bridge of tissue in about six weeks. This then makes a larger space in the carpal tunnel to help prevent median nerve pressure and injury in majority of patients.
