Dequervains Tendonitis
De Quervain's tendonitis happens when two main tendons near the thumb base become inflamed and irritated. There is a sheath that holds the two tendons in place at the wrist and keeps them from bowing out or sub-luxing. This sheath forms a tunnel for the tendons. Unfortunately the tunnel does not change size. The contents with in the tunnel do. The tendons have synovial tissue and synovial fluid which help them glide. This irritation to the tendons causes inflammation of the synovial tissue and fluid. Which then develops tendonitis. Tendonitis develops because of repetitive activity, trauma, illnesses, medications, pregnancy, and also by unknown causes. A noticeable tender lump at the wrist can develop, due to the inflammation of the sheath. Once a patient has developed tendonitis, it is quiet painful and has major weakness.
